The Village at Caerleon

(Caerleon)

My friend Julie recommended ‘The Village’ to me and although not visiting much, I have visited from time to time with my little dog ‘Frankie’ on some of my walks around Caerleon.

You can tell if it’s doggie friendly when there’s a bowl left out for our canine friends before you even enter the shop or café. It’s encouraging to know that it is a place you can take your four legged friend and I’ve also noticed a good number of bikers use The Village when I’ve been passing.

It’s obviously built up a reputation in the community over a good number of years and is well known as a bakery which is how I first knew it. I’m going back to the early 70’s when I first started work in Caerleon and used to order bread (a large brown) mostly to impress my then to be mother in law, three times a week.

Hopefully I impressed her most days otherwise she wouldn’t have let me marry her daughter Julie, but that’s a whole other story. No…it’s just that I can go back 50 years to a time when it’s was popular even then and was well known for its bread. That’s a heck of a long time to be in business so something must be good about The Village and I’m sure Julie could work this one out:

If I baked 20 loaves of bread, 6 days a week for 50 years how much flour, water, salt and yeast would I have used ‘approximately’?

Answers please to miss Edwards and no conferring!

I’ll bet she never posed a question like that to any of her students but although not waiting for an answer, probably somebody knows and ‘I’d’ like to know more from visitors who like me over the years have had the opportunity to walk through the doors that I first did five decades ago.

To really give a ‘coffee shop review’ justice, it needs to be authentic and added to by visitors and regulars who like me, have had the pleasure of popping in for coffee and goodies over the years ‘and’ taking away a loaf to keep us fed for the rest of the day.

if you’ve been one of those many visitors and if you’ve got some pictures you can share then please do. I’d like to hear from you and better still if you know any history or what’s happening now, then I and other readers would like to know.
